America's Cup and Learning about floating and sinking

When we were watching "America's Cup" it was the ideal time to look at what objects float and sinks.

We read this poem and then the children took a piece of plasticine to see what would happen.

Floating

I flattened out my plasticine

and set it in the tank.

And do you know the cheeky thing

turned round and slowly sank.

But when I took it out again

and shaped it like a boat.

It wasn’t cheeky any more

For it began to float

Albert Crawford

The children were able to see what happens when a piece of plasticine is put into water. They tried to see how they could shape the plasticine to allow it to float. This took them a while to work out the best shape to use and they had to be very careful how they put the shape into the water.

They also found objects around the class and they had to predict what would float or sink and say why to their partners before they put them in the water.

The Swamp Eggs

We read the shared book called "The Swamp Eggs" by Jo Windsor. We then researched about swamp hens and from there the class went on to making our own water colour pieces of art.

ANZAC

This week we looked at videos and read stories about ANZAC and what does it mean.

The children then created artwork using watercolours to show a representation of what the soldiers did and they used collage to show the poppies that are worn every year on ANZAC day to remember those that went to war.

Duffy Theatre Show

We had the pleasure of being an audience for the Duffy Theatre Show at school. The show was "Duffy in bubble trouble." The play is based around COVID19. The play was very funny and the students were all engaged in the show. They used both Te Reo and English to tell their story.

They loved watching the actors create all the sounds using things they had found.

Look at the children's faces and reactions.
